Borna Coric (VCORE Tour F 97, POLYTOUR SPIN) met with Ukrainian veteran Sergiy Stakhovsky—11 years Borna’s senior—for a prolonged and intense five-set first round match. After dropping the first set, Borna struck back in the second, securing it in a close tiebreaker. The World No. 40 Croatian then broke early in the third to lead by two sets. The Ukrainian however dragged the match into a fifth set, where Borna fought his way to a victory, closing the match at 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2, 1-6, 9-7 after nearly four hours.
In complete contrast to the young Croatian rising star, on the women’s side Angelique Kerber’s (VCORE Si 100) first round was a brief affair that concluded in less than an hour. Against German compatriot Carina Witthoeft, Angelique completely dominated the match. The World No. 10 broke her opponent six times while maintaining an unbreakable serve. With 21 winners, Angelique sealed a confident double bagel victory, 6-0 6-0.
Fellow German Sabine Lisicki (VCORE Tour F 97, POLYTOUR SPIN) is also into round 2 with a straight-set victory over Jarmila Gajdosova. After a tight opening set, Sabine broke early in the second to take the lead. She proceeded to fire off three aces in the second-to-last game, sealing the match with a break in the final, advancing into round 2 at 7-5, 6-4.
VCORE is the racquet for big, aggressive serves, as seen by wins in day 2 from Borna, Angelique and Sabine, and victories on day 1 from Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Tour G, SHT-PRO) and Juan Monaco (VCORE Si 98). Borna and Sabine’s VCORE Tour F features unique aerodynamic fins on the inner part of the frame head that cut down on air resistance for a 6% faster serve. Angie and Juan’s VCORE Si is made with specially-shaped grommet holes that allow for increased string movement, putting more spin on the ball, letting you fire off sizzling match-deciding winners.
