Wimbledon: CoCo Pulls off Huge Upset; Belinda Into R3

The third day of Wimbledon saw Team YONEX EZONE players make it through to round 3 after a number of impressive matches.

A huge upset came in women’s singles with the USA’s CoCo Vandeweghe (EZONE Ai 98) blasting past No. 11 seed Karolina Pliskova in straight sets. The World No. 47 got the edge over the Czech with her mammoth serve and solid groundstrokes. CoCo narrowly grasped the first set after a tight tiebreaker, proceeding to take the second with slightly less trouble. The New York native fired off 15 aces to close the match at 7-6(5), 6-4.

Belinda Bencic (EZONE Ai 100, POLYTOUR HS 125) secured a win over Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam. The first two sets proved tight, with both players taking one set each, but Belinda came through with overwhelming strength in the decider. The up-and-coming Swiss didn’t allow her serve to be broken even once in the final set, while grabbing three breaks of her own to record a 7-5, 4-6, 6-0 victory.

In men’s singles, Roland Garros champion Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Tour G, SHT-PRO) advanced confidently into round three after defeating Victor Estrella Burgos. The World No. 4 won in straight sets recording 15 aces, closing the match at 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Nick Kyrgios (EZONE Ai 98, POLYTOUR PRO 120) went up against Juan Monaco (VCORE Si 98) in round 2, advancing in straight sets as well. The 20-year-old powerhouse prevailed with a rock-solid serve that remained unbreakable for the entirety of the match, and fired off 39 winners to move into round 3 with a 7-6(5), 6-3, 6-4 scoreline.

In women’s doubles, No. 1 seeds Martina Hingis (EZONE Ai 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125, SHT-PROL) and Sania Mirza advanced in just over an hour against Zarina Diyas and Saisai Zheng. The duo commanded the match from early on, earning a 6-2, 6-2 win with little trouble. They will meet Kimiko Date-Krumm (S-FiT Radia, POLYTOUR SPIN) and Francesca Schiavone in round 2, who won over Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Andreja Klepac at 6-4, 6-2.
