Wimbledon 2016: Strong Victories in Round 1

The Wimbledon main draw got underway on June 27th, and saw the members of Team Yonex make great starts at the tournament.

German Players Impress on Grass

Angelique Kerber (VCORE Si 100, POLYTOUR FIRE 120) got her Wimbledon campaign off to a roaring start with a strong and focused win over former British No. 1 Laura Robson. The heavy-hitting 2016 Australian Open champ was strong on serve, winning 86% of her first serve points, and took the opening set with a solid ace. Moving into set 2, Angie brilliantly navigated the court, capitalized on her opponent’s many errors, and broke the local player 4 times. The No. 4 seed took the match at 6-2, 6-2 when her opponent sent the ball flying into the net.

Fellow German and grass extraordinaire Sabine Lisicki (VCORE Tour F 97POLYTOUR SPIN) wowed spectators as she won the first game of her first match in under a minute at 52 seconds. Up against American Shelby Rogers, Sabine launched three explosive aces and one huge serve to seize the opening game. The German would collect a total of 9 aces, 19 winners and 5 break points en route to a straight 6-1, 6-3 victory in one minute short of an hour.

Pierre-Hugues into Round 2

On the men’s side, AEGON Championships men's doubles champion Pierre-Hugues Herbert (VCORE Duel G 97, POLYTOUR FIRE 125) made his start in singles with a victory over No. 21 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber—one of the best performances of his career. Boasting a superb service game, the Frenchman scored 9 aces against the World No. 22. Pierre-Hugues would move forward towards victory picking up 38 winners en route to a final score of 7-5, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Day 2 will see No. 4 seed Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Duel G 97, POWER CUSHION ECLIPSION) face off against American Taylor Fritz, while No. 7 seed Belinda Bencic (EZONE DR 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125) goes face to face with Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova.
