No. 9 seed Stanislas Wawrinka (VCORE Tour 97) pulled off a stunning victory against the defending champion, third seeded Andy Murray, in the quarterfinals on Day 11 of the US Open. It’s a momentous win for Stan in overcoming such a strong rival, who concurrently holds two Grand Slam titles and a gold medal from the London Olympics, and secures his place in a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time in 35 attempts over his eleven-year pro career.
Stan played with steely nerves against the No. 3 seed in the showcase match. He was particularly efficient on his serve, winning on 88% of his first serves to deny his opponent any break opportunities throughout the contest. With his strong backhands and dogged persistence, Stan capitalized on four of the eleven break points he earned to take the lead. Stan’s solid performance put Murray under a lot of pressure, forcing errors on important points. With 45 winners against his hard-hitting rival, the Swiss player notched up a resounding victory in straight sets [6-4, 6-3, 6-2] with a service ace to finish.
Stan exulted in an on-court interview, “It’s amazing for sure – especially here, especially after that match. Andy is the defending champion. He’s a tough opponent. I’m just really happy. It was a crazy match for me. To beat him in three sets is just amazing,” according to ATP official website.
In the junior singles events, talented young YONEX players, Borna Coric (VCORE Tour 97, PTGSPN), Belinda Bencic (EZONE Xi, PTGH125) and Mayo Hibi (EZONE Xi 98, PTGP125) impressed with their third round victories on Thursday. Borna achieved to reach all junior Grand Slam quarterfinals this year. Two-time junior Grand Slam singles champion, Belinda, also advanced to the semifinals in the junior doubles competition.
