In men’s singles, World No. 5 Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Tour G, SHT-PRO) clutched a first round win in straight sets against Spanish Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The match proved close in the third set, with Stan’s Spanish opponent looking to force a fourth. Stan however powered forward through to a tiebreaker, sealing the match at 7-5, 6-4, 7-6(6). The Roland Garros champion scored 10 aces and 53 winners against the World No. 58, and now stands undefeated against the Spaniard, with a head-to-head record of 5-0.
Elsewhere, former US Open champion Lleyton Hewitt (VCORE Tour 97, YONEX Shoes) exhibited great energy on the court against Aleksandr Nedovyesov of Kazakhstan. The Australian veteran came down strong on his opponent, securing a 6-0, 7-6, 1-0 victory before Nedovyesov retired. Meanwhile, Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka (VCORE Si 98, POLYTOUR SPIN, FUSION REV) pulled off a come-back victory over French Paul-Henri Mathieu in full sets at 6-4, 2-6, 6-7(7), 6-1, 6-2.
In women’s singles, Angelique Kerber (VCORE Si 100) advanced confidently in her first round match against Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru. The German rushed to a 5-0 lead in the first set, but faced some resistance from her opponent before finishing the set. The second set proved smoother for the German, wrapping the match up at 6-3, 6-1 with 18 winners to her name. Sabine Lisicki (VCORE Tour F 97, POLYTOUR SPIN) also comfortably moved into the second round with a straight 6-1, 6-4 win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich from Belarus, scoring 11 aces en route.
