US Open: More Straight Set Triumphs Heading into Round 3

Team VCORE continued their advance through the ranks at the US Open on the tournament’s fourth day.

2015 Roland Garros champion Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Tour GSHT-PRO) earned his 100th Grand Slam match win in the second round of the US Open against Korean youngster Hyeon Chung. Stan rushed to a 3-0 lead in the opening set, but the match would prove to be tighter from there. While the Korean teenager attempted to test the Swiss by taking each set into a tiebreaker, Stan showed his opponent what it means to be a two-time Grand Slam champ. The pivotal moment came in the last set’s tiebreaker, where Stan heaped pressure on Chung during his match point, resulting in the Korean hitting wide, taking Stan to round 3 at 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 7-6(6). Stan the Man fired off 26 aces and 62 winners against his young opponent through to his straight-set win.

Angelique Kerber (VCORE Si 100) is also into round 3 in straight sets with a win over Italian Karin Knapp. Despite being led early on, the German snagged two break points to seal the close opening set. Grabbing two more breaks in the second, Angie engineered a clean win, finishing the match at 7-5, 6-2. Sabine Lisicki (VCORE Tour F 97, POLYTOUR SPIN) progressed into round 3 in straight sets as well, with a tidy win over Camila Giorgi. With 13 aces to 1, 23 winners to 9, and serve speeds that reached 125 MPH, the record-breaking German sealed a 6-4, 6-0 win.

Martina Hingis (EZONE DR 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125, SHT-PROL) women’s doubles campaign got underway with Sania Mirza, winning over Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria at 6-1, 6-2 in just under one hour.
