Borna Coric (VCORE Tour F 97, POLYTOUR SPIN) is making history with three other teens at the tournament, marking the first time four teenagers have advanced to the tournament’s second round since 2007. The 18-year-old Croatian came back from a set down against opponent Andreas Haider-Maurer to impressively seize the following set with a break that would lead him into the decider. Borna was faced with a 1-4 deficit in the third set, but the teenager retaliated with ferocious tenacity, conquering long rallies, and made assertive runs to the net at just the right times. The final set ran into a tiebreaker, which Borna seized confidently, serving the match out at 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(3). No. 7 seed Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Tour G, SHT-PRO) won his opening match against Carlos Berlocq, 6(9)-7, 7-5, 6-2.
Belinda Bencic (EZONE Ai 100, POLYTOUR HS 125) advanced to round 3, defeating No. 32 seed Casey Dellacqua at 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, grabbing seven break points while saving nine. Ana Ivanovic (EZONE Ai 98) is set to meet Sabine Lisicki (VCORE Tour 97, POLYTOUR SPIN) to fight for a spot in the fourth round. The two won after extended opening matches, with scorelines of 7-5, 6(4)-7, 6-3 and 7-6(1), 6(5)-7, 6-4 respectively.
Daria Gavrilova (EZONE Ai 100, POLYTOUR HS 125) brought about the biggest upset of the tournament, grabbing a second-round win over No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova. Having just entered the Top 100 and making her first appearance at the Miami Open, the 21-year-old Russian earned her first win over a Top 10 player. After engaging in a close first set that ran into a tiebreaker, Daria quickly took control of the second set by grabbing a 3-0 lead, summarily closing out the match in straight sets at 7-6(4), 6-3. “I'm very happy, very excited. I think I gained a lot confidence with this win,” she commented after the match. “My EZONE racquet gives me a lot of power, and good control as well,” continued Daria, praising her racquet.
