In men’s singles Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Tour G, SHT-PRO) pulled off two impressive straight-set wins on his journey to a second Grand Slam title. The World No. 9 Swiss met American Steve Johnson in round 3, firing off eight aces and 32 winners against his opponent, who was unable to create a single break chance. The match was over in a mere 89 minutes, with a final score of 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. Round 4 saw Stan proceed to claim victory over Gilles Simon on his home soil. After swiftly seizing the first set, Stan continued to pile on pressure in set 2 despite a more aggressive effort by the French No. 1. After firing off an explosive forehand winner down the line to take the second set, Stan the Man summarily took the final set in 35 minutes, with the final score coming to 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
Ana Ivanovic (EZONE Ai 98) is back in a Grand Slam quarterfinal after two solid victories. The World No. 7 Serb met up with Croatian rising star and fellow Team YONEX player Donna Vekic (VCORE Si 100), winning seven consecutive games to lead 6-0 1-0. 18-year-old Donna struck back to grab the lead in the second set, but Ana came powering back, winning at 6-0, 6-3 in under an hour. Round 4 put Ana up against Ekaterina Makarova in a closer encounter. Despite her Russian opponent dragging the match into a decider, Ana secured the final set in top form, claiming victory with an inside out forehand winner. The match closed at 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, and Ana became the first player this year into the RG quarterfinals.
In women’s doubles, Martina Hingis (EZONE Ai 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125, SHT-PROL) and Sania Mirza are into the quarterfinals, beating Karin Knapp and Roberta Vinci in round 3 in exactly one hour, 6-1, 6-4.
