ACAPULCO, Mexico — The men’s Singles final of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel Tournament concluded with Nick Kyrgios (AUS) outlasting opponent Alexander Zverev (GER) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. The win marked the Aussie’s first tournament win of the season and fifth ATP title of his career.
In a stunning road to victory, Kyrgios broke World No. 2 Rafael Nadal (ESP) three times in the second round — using his powerful serve to help carry him to victory. In the semifinals, he toppled John Isner (USA), and defeated Zverev in the final to complete a rout of some of the top 10 athletes on tour.
“The crowd created the atmosphere every day. It was the best atmosphere I’ve ever played in. They were booing me and I still enjoyed playing and being here.” Kyrgios credited his play to those in attendance.
Kyrgios’ next stop will be at the BNP Paribas Open where he hopes to continue his much-speculated comeback of 2019.
Maximo Gonzalez (ARG) continued his spectacular play as he cruised to a third consecutive title, winning men’s doubles at the Brazil Open. Gonzalez has been on a tear through South America as of late. Winning the Argentina and Rio Open, all within the span of a month.
Team Yonex looks to make its next big impact at the upcoming BNP Paribas Open kicking off this week and Miami Open starting March 18th.
