Following her big victory against No.2 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals, Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100) defeated No. 4 seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the semifinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open In Tokyo Japan .
The fifth seeded Kerber concentrated on playing steadily and overcoming the pressure from her opponent in the first set. Kerber got out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set and had to dig deep to eventually win the first set 6-4.. The second set was particularly challenging for each player, consisting of hard rallies in every game. Angelique was pushed from side to side by Caroline’s aggressive attacks; she remained calm to overcome the tough situation and attacked with spirited endurance. After a thrilling tiebreak Angelique finally defeated the 2010 champion 6-4, 7-6(5). In the post match interview Kerber said, “The match was very close, and it’s always tough to play a very close friend, but I’ve been playing very well this whole week and I’m really happy to be in the finals here for the first time,” according to the WTA website.
In her seventh career final, Angelique will face No. 7 seed Petra Kvitova.
