Kerber Becomes Runner-up in Tokyo

This year’s WTA Premier tournament was the first all-lefty final since Martina Navratilova faced Monica Seles in Paris in 1993. Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100) faced No. 7 seed Petra Kvitova at the Toray Pan Pacific Open on Saturday, September 28.

Angelique reclaimed her performance and played exceptionally well in the final. Even though Petra claimed the first set, Angelique dominated the Czech player in second set 6-0. After coming back from 0-4 deficit, Kerber would eventually lose the third set and the match 2-6, 6-0, 3-6.

After the match, Kerber took to Facebook to thank the Japanese fans for their support during the tournament, “Disappointed but also happy for my achievement in this tournament. Working hard pays and I’m starting to be rewarded. A special thank you to Tokyo crowd and to you my followers. You gave me extra strength to go and fight harder”

Angelique played in her second WTA final of the year in Tokyo. Earlier this year, she was the runner-up at the WTA Tour’s Monterrey Open In Mexico in April.

On the ATP Tour, the world tenth-ranked Stanislas Wawrinka (VCORE Tour 97) became the semifinalist at the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur defeating No. 6 seed Dmitry Tursunov of Russia with a comeback victory, 2-6 6-3 7-6(3). He earned valuable points last week as he bids to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for the first time in his career.
