Internazionali BNL d'Italia: Team YONEX Excels on Clay

Rome’s Internazionali BNL d'Italia came to a close on May 17th, with several members of Team Yonex making fine runs at the tournament.



Martina Hingis (EZONE Ai 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125, SHT-PROL) is proving potent on clay, after three wins early in the year with her new partner, Sania Mirza, the duo made it to the Internazionali BNL d'Italia women’s doubles final. They faced No. 4 seeds Caroline Garcia/ Katarina Srebotnik in the semifinal, winning at 6-2, 7-6(5) after saving a set point in the tiebreak. The pair’s placement as finalists in this tournament takes them back to the No. 1 spot on the Road to Singapore doubles leaderboard.

Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Tour G, SHT-PRO) placed as a semifinalist in the tournament after defeating seven-time champion and clay expert Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the quarterfinal. The opening set proved tight, with the Swiss holding off four set points in the tiebreaker. Stan the Man dominated in the second set, closing the match at 7-6(7), 6-2, striking 25 winners and saving seven break throughout the entire match.

Team Yonex young guns also impressed at the clay tournament. Daria Gavrilova (EZONE Ai 100POLYTOUR PRO 125) reached the semifinals after a series of challenging matches, and in men’s doubles Nick Kyrgios (EZONE Ai 98, POLYTOUR PRO 120)—paired with the USA’s Jack Sock—also reached the semifinals, powering past the No. 8 and No. 2 seeds.
