Coco Vandeweghe Grabs Topshelf Title: Angelique and Martina Runners-Up at Aegon International

The weekend of June 21st/22nd proved to be positive for a number of YONEX female players with strong outcomes in the finals of several tournaments.

Coco Vandeweghe (EZONE Ai 98)  a 22-year-old American tennis player, won her first WTA title, moving up the ranks from the qualifiers through to the final. Coco demonstrated exceptional performance and in the final match was up against another YONEX player, Zheng Jie (EZONE Ai 98, POLYTOUR SPIN). While both players were un-seeded, Jie is a grass court expert, but that didn’t stop Coco from confidently taking the match. Coco played strongly with powerful serves, scoring on her first serve an incredible 27 of 28 times. She also had eight aces, and didn’t face any break points from her opponent, neatly tying up the game in 70 minutes at 6-2 6-4.

Coco talked about the secret to her success on the WTA website, saying, “I got the first set and I thought to myself, 'One set good, one more to go, try and get the early break now and keep the pressure on her.’ I was really just thinking about it step by step, just like how I would play in any other match."

Meanwhile, at the Aegon International, Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100) also made her way to the finals. Facing Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinal, the two had a tough three-set match. Coming up from a set behind, Angelique managed to take the match from her former-world-No.1 opponent with 54 winners, closing the match by a final score of 3-6 7-6(3) 6-3. "Caroline is a tough opponent and I think we played a tough match and at a really high level. I enjoyed it out there and I'm happy to be in the final. I'm feeling very good on grass - it suits my game," Angie commented on the match on her official website.

The final put Angelique against Madison Keys. Angelique demonstrated a strong performance, nearly winning in the tough match against the young American.

The un-seeded Martina Hingis (EZONE Ai 100, POLYTOUR PRO 125, SHT-PRO) and her partner Flavia Pennetta beat the second-seeded pair of Katarina Srebotnik and Kveta Peschke in a close semifinal match, 6-4 4-6 10-8. Martina and Flavia had a tough final match against Hao-Ching Chan/Yung-Jan Chan, finishing as the runners-up in the tournament in the end.

All  these players have achieved great results and their performances at Wimbledon will certainly be exciting to see!
