Belinda earned this title with the EZONE DR, the newest evolution in the EZONE series that gives players more power than ever before. “The racquet gives me more power, and I felt like I was able to effectively out-hit Serena,” commented Belinda on the new racquet.
The un-seeded 18-year-old made it past several of the sport’s big names on her way towards victory: The second round saw her confidently overtake Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets at 7-5, 7-5, and she also secured wins over Team YONEX players Sabine Lisicki (VCORE Tour F 97, POLYTOUR SPIN) and Ana Ivanovic (EZONE DR 98).
The biggest match win of her career came in the semifinal over Serena Williams—her very first win over a World No. 1. Down a set and playing at 3-all, Belinda turned the tables on the American, relentlessly attacking to take the second set at 7-5, and immediately shot up to 5-1 in the decider. Williams managed to catch up, but Belinda successfully clutched her chance at victory by firing off a colossal forehand winner to book her place in the final with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 scoreline. She is the youngest player to win over Williams since 2004.
Under the hot sun, the teenager matched the aggressiveness of World No. 3 Simona Halep with her own assertive plays. Belinda was crowned the winner at 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 3-0 upon her opponent’s retirement from the match.
Belinda has won two WTA singles titles so far, and both have been at the Premier level. The teenager also earned her second doubles title last week at the Citi Open. Needless to say, the Swiss teenager is starting to make a big name for herself.
