Belinda Bencic Becomes Youngest US Open Quarterfinalist since Martina Hingis

Round three and four of the US Open’s women’s singles tournament proved to be explosive for young Swiss rising star Belinda Bencic (EZONE Ai 100POLYTOUR HS 125).

On August 29th, Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100) and Belinda made their way to the court for what would one of the biggest matches for the 17-year-old Swiss rising star. Belinda boasted excellent court coverage, hitting at great angles, managing to overtake her opponent skillfully. Scoring 23 winners and converting five break points, Belinda won the match with a forehand winner in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. She went on to meet number nine seed Jelena Jankovic in the fourth round, once again running away with an impressive victory. In the first set, Belinda saved three set points, taking the set into a tiebreaker. After seizing the tiebreaker, she went on to take the second set confidently. With Belinda claiming 30 winners, the match wrapped up in just over two hours, the score coming to 7-6(6), 6-3.

Between winning against both Angelique and Jankovic, this tournament marks the first time Belinda has defeated top-ten players—winning both matches in straight sets. Furthermore, she’s the youngest player to reach the US Open quarterfinal since her mentor Martina Hingis (EZONE Ai 100POLYTOUR PRO 125) won the US open in 1997.

This year’s US Open is proving to be a good one for YONEX players, so be sure to keep cheering them on!
