Australian Open 2015: Stan Continues Stellar Run; Coco Upsets Aussie No. 1

January 22nd saw defending champion Stan Wawrinka (VCORE Tour GSHT-PRO) make it into the third round of the Australian Open for a seventh year in a row after a tight match under the hot Australian sun against Marius Copil. Stan demonstrated robust defense against the Romanian’s big serves, saving five break points. Also boasting tough offence, Stan the Man kept his opponent at the baseline with crushing strokes, earning 36 winners across the match’s two hours and 16 minutes. The Swiss world No. 4 managed to break the big-serving Marius two times, the second time proving pivotal to winning the match upon a double-fault on the part of Marius. The final score came to 7-6(4), 7-6(4), 6-3.



In women’s singles Coco Vandeweghe (EZONE Ai 98) pulled off an incredible upset against local No. 1 and 20th seed Samantha Stosur. Running at an hour and 17 minutes, Coco made it to her first third round of a major hitting big; with her fastest serve clocking in at 195km/h. The 23-year-old American rising star won an astounding 29 winners while rocketing off 11 aces—the final of which won her the match point. Coco took the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

In men’s doubles, Pierre-Hugues Herbert (VCORE Tour G, YONEX String) and his partner Nicolas Mahut advanced to the second round against Martin Klizan and Philipp Oswald. The Rakuten Open doubles champ won with a 7-6(6), 7-6(2) score line. Women’s doubles saw Zheng Jie (EZONE Ai 98POLYTOUR SPIN) and partner Yung-Jan Chan blow away their European opponents in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
