Angie Makes Aegon International Semifinals: Pierre Makes Wimbledon Main Draw

In preparation for Wimbledon, YONEX tennis player, Angelique Kerber (VCORE Xi 100), is performing very well on the grass courts of Devonshire Park, and is in the semifinals at Aegon International. She defeated Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova in the quarterfinal, 6-2 6-1. In her ninth match against Makarova, Angie converted six of 13 break points, and only let her opponent break once out of five times. Looking only at the score, it may not seem like a difficult match, but Angie commented on her opponent on her official website saying, “It was not as easy as you can see by the score, because there were tough rallies, and we’ve had a lot of close matches in the past.” Angie continued, “She's a great player on grass, so I was just focusing on my game, trying to be aggressive and take my chances.” Angie commented that she herself also likes to play on grass and said, “That's why I'm playing the week before Wimbledon, to have some more good matches on grass.”

With this positive attitude, we can expect a fine performance from Angie come her first Wimbledon match. Don’t miss it!

Two of YONEX’s younger players will also be making appearances in Wimbledon this year. The first is Pierre-Hugues Herbert (VCORE Tour G, YONEX Strings), who defeated Miloslav Mecir,  4-6 6-3 7-5 6-4, advancing into the main draw. He boasts some fine achievements in junior Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the 2009 US Open semifinals, and winning in boys’ doubles at Wimbledon in 2009.

Next is Nick Kyrgios (EZONE Ai 98). As reported earlier, he won at the Aegon Nottingham Challenger, earning a spot at Wimbledon as a wildcard. His accomplishments during the junior Grand Slam tournaments, allowed him into the boys’ singles quarterfinals in Wimbledon and the US Open in 2012. He also won in his home country at the 2013 Australian Open. Taking his recent grass court victory at the Aegon Nottingham Challenger into consideration, he’s in a good position to excel at Wimbledon.
