Angelique Kerber Stuns World No. 2 at Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

German Angelique Kerber (VCORE Si 100) earned the biggest match win of her career in front of her home crowd at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix held in Stuttgart, Germany. The world No. 14 met up with No. 1 seed and world No. 2 Maria Sharapova for an invigorating second round match.

Three-time defending champion Sharapova seemed poised to take the match after grabbing the first set at 6-2, but Angie had other plans. As the match entered the second set, Angelique stopped the Russian in her tracks, winning three consecutive games to take the set at 7-5, despite being lead 5-4 earlier. Sharapova’s errors began to pile up in the deciding set, while Angie was landing winner after winner in her opponent’s side of the court. After nearly two hours and a half, Angie advanced to round 3 with a score of 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, landing 22 winners and 6 break points.

“It's a special moment and a special tournament for me - to play at home and in front of all of my family and friends, it's a great feeling. It's my favorite tournament, and the best tournament for me," commented Angie upon her big win on the WTA website.

Prior to her match, Angie showed up in front of a huge crowd of fans for an autograph session. Along with getting the fellow German star’s signature, many fans were able to get a picture with the Family Circle Cup champion.
