Angelique Kerber Attains Third Premier Title for the Year

Angelique Kerber (VCORE Si 100) clutched her first grass title of the year ahead of Wimbledon on June 21st at the Aegon Classic Birmingham. The World No. 10 German made a confident run to the final, securing her three matches leading up to the final in straight sets.

Angie’s final against Karolina Pliskova proved to be a protracted outing that lasted for over two hours. After dropping the first set in a tight tiebreaker, Angelique made a comeback in the second set to force a decider. The third set proved to be a tense affair as well: With the score at 6-5, Angie sent the match into a tiebreaker with an ace. She proceeded to secure three consecutive points from 4-all in the tiebreaker, brilliantly winning the title. The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix champion exhibited impressive perseverance against her opponent’s 52 winners throughout the match, the final score coming to 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(4).

This is Angelique’s third Premier title this year after earning two in a row at the Family Circle Cup and Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. She is only the second player this season to earn three Premier-level titles.

Grass-specialist Sabine Lisicki (VCORE Tour F 97POLYTOUR SPIN) made it to the semifinals, breaking another new record along the way. The World No. 18 made history by becoming the woman to hit the most aces ever in a single match, firing off 27 in the tournament’s second round. She previously broke the record for fastest serve on July 29th, 2014 at the Bank of the West Classic, hitting a 131 mph (210.8 kmh) in the tournament’s first round.

In women’s doubles, Andrea Hlavackova (RQiS 2 Tour, POLYTOUR PRO 125) and Lucie Hradecka placed as finalists. The un-seeded pair beat the No. 3 seeds en-route to the final.
