2019 US Open: 14 players advance to R3 on Day 4

FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY — A near rainout on Wednesday could not dampen the momentum of Team Yonex in the second round of the US Open. With 75 matches being played across the grounds at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, new faces prevailed and past champions cruised.

World No. 1 Naomi Osaka (JPN) stopped Magda Linette’s win streak at nine with a straight-set victory. After winning the first set, Osaka found herself down 0-3, but won 21 of 24 points during a second-set stretch to escape.

“I think the main thing for me was that I was able to adjust whenever I figured out something was going wrong,” said Osaka. “I think I'm heading in the right direction.”

Similarly to his opening match, Stan Wawrinka (SUI) needed four-sets to advance. Only facing two break points the entire match, Wawrinka was never broken and fired off 45 winners to reach the third round where he will face Paolo Lorenzi in their fourth-career meeting.

Just one of five teenagers in the second round, Dayana Yastremska (UKR) needed just over 75 minutes to advance to the third round of a major for the third time this year. She will play fellow Ukrainian [5] Elina Svitolina for a spot in the second week on Friday.

Later on in the afternoon, Denis Shapovalov and Nick Kyrgios continued their quick on-court time with consecutive straight-set wins. The pair has not dropped a set and is looking to take advantage of the quarter of their draw, where the highest seeded player is Gael Monfils at 13.

Hyeon Chung (KOR) wrapped up Day 4 action under the lights, joining Alexander Bublik (KAZ) and Kamil Majchrzak (POL) with a five-set victory. Chung’s second-straight five-set match moved him into the third round in New York for the first time in his career. He will play [2] Rafael Nadal for a spot in the round of 16.
