2019 Roland Garros: Vondrousova, Wawrinka advance to the quarterfinals

PARIS, France – Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) continued her dominance in Paris to open the second week. In her fourth round match, Vondrousova raced out to a 3-0 start, dropped the next two games, and then won the final nine to advance with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over [12] Anastasija Sevastova.

"I think I played my best tennis today," said Vondrousova, who will play [31] Petra Martic in her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance. Vondrousova will be looking for revenge from their previous meeting, where Martic won in three sets in finals of Istanbul in April.

With her win today, Vondrousova will move into the WTA top-30 for the first time in her career. The young Czech star has advanced to the quarterfinals or better in every tournament since the Australian Open.

In a five-set thriller to wrap up the first weekend, [24] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) battled past [6] Stefanos Tsitsipas in over five hours to advance to his first Grand Slam quarterfinal since his knee injury in the summer of 2017.

After the pair split the first four sets, Wawrinka faced an onslaught of break points to open the fifth, saving a total of eight in the final set. While Wawrinka’s serve was tough to hold, Tsitsipas was cruising in each of his service games, dropping only five points entering the 6-7 game.

However, in the final game of the match, Wawrinka’s experience was on full display. After dropping the first point, Wawrinka won the next three to go up 15-40. After a service return error on the first match point, Wawrinka sliced a backhand passing shot from the doubles alley for his 62nd winner of the day to advance with a 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, 3-6, 8-6 victory.

Wawrinka will play countryman Roger Federer for a spot in the semifinals on Tuesday.
