2019 Roland Garros: Team Yonex Advances to R3

Top-seeded Naomi Osaka survived another upset bid, while Stan Wawrinka and Casper Ruud continue to cruise on the clay.

Day 4

On paper, [24] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) had one of the more difficult second round matches against Chile’s Christian Garin. Garin jumped nearly 50 spots in the ATP Rankings this year and won two clay court titles entering Roland Garros.

However, Wawrinka saved all five break points he faced and needed a little over 90 minutes to dispatch Garin in straight sets. The Swiss star will face Grigor Dimitrov in the third round.

Later in the day, Casper Ruud (NOR) continued his stellar play on clay and recorded a straight-set victory over 29th-seeded Matteo Berrettini.

Ruud’s first appearance in the third round at Roland Garros will be one to remember. The 20-year-old will face Roger Federer, who made his French Open debut in 1999, where Ruud’s father and current coach was also a player in the draw.

On the women’s side, Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) won the battle of two teenagers, when she defeated Anastasia Potapova in straight-sets. Vondrousova, who is one of eight teenagers in the draw, was down 1-4 in the opening set, but won the next 11 games to advance to the third round for the first time in her career.

[12] Anastasija Sevastova (LAT) and [23] Donna Vekic (CRO) will be both looking to reach the round of 16 for the first time in their careers on Friday after their round two victories. Sevastova scored another straight-set win, while Vekic rallied back from losing the first set 1-6 to advance.

Day 5

[15] Belinda Bencic’s (SUI) match was suspended due to light at 4-4 in the third set against Laura Siegemund on Wednesday, which meant the World No. 15 had to sleep on her nerves before taking the court again.

Bencic was able to maintain her focus from the day before and made sure there was no drama on Thursday, as she won the final two games in five minutes to set up a third round clash with Vekic.

The first match on Suzanne-Lenglen on Day 5 featured the current World No. 1 and a former World No. 1 in a blockbusters second round match. Top-seeded Naomi Osaka (JPN) dropped the first set to Victoria Azarenka and was down a break in the second but rallied back to escape in three sets.

“For me, I just don’t want to leave the court with regrets,” said Osaka after her second-straight comeback win. “If there’s something I think I could have done better, I definitely want to do it in the match.”

Monica Puig (PUR), who is playing on arguably her best surface, cruised in her second round match to wrap up action on Day 5. After a grueling two-and-a-half hour doubles match the day before, Puig fired off 30 winners and needed just over an hour to advance to the third round.
