INDIAN WELLS, California — Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic’s (CHE) birthday celebrations continued in Indian Wells, as the now 22-year-old won her 11th-straight match to advance to the quarterfinals.
Bencic has defeated five top-10 opponents during her recent winning streak and will play [5] Karolina Pliskova for a chance at another upset.
Unseeded Marketa Vondrousova (CZE) also continued her dominant play in the desert. The 19-year-old recorded her first career top-10 victory after defeating [2] Simona Halep in the round of 16, marking her third-straight win over a seeded opponent.
The last player to advance to the quarterfinals at this year’s BNP Paribas Open was Angelique Kerber (GER) after defeating [9] Aryna Sabalenka in three sets. Down 1-4 in the final set, Kerber stormed back to win the final five games to set up a quarterfinal match with Venus Williams.
“For sure it was the toughest match of the tournament for me,” said Kerber. “It was an up and down match, a lot of emotions on court. The third set, I think it was just another fight and another comeback from me.
