Yonex All England Open 2017: Lee Chong Wei Wins Fourth Title; Indonesian Pair Wins First at Year-Opening Superseries

The 107th Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships came to a spectacular conclusion on March 12th, 2017. The final day would see a number of heated matches from Yonex’s top players.

Four for Lee Chong Wei

World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei (DUORA 10POWER CUSHION 03 Z MEN) hoisted up the coveted Yonex All England trophy the fourth time in his career after defeating Chinese Shi Yuqi in the tournament’s final match.

With the fervent cheers of fans resonating throughout the Barclaycard Arena, the Malaysian master of the court proved too much for his young opponent to handle. DUORA 10 in hand, Chong Wei picked up point after point with sublime drives and ferocious smashes. The Malaysian was overtaken only once across the 45 minute match, and never lost the lead in the second game. Chong Wei sealed his 21-12 21-10 victory with a pin-point smash straight into the back corner of Yuqi’s court.

Chong Wei was playing in the new POWER CUSHION 03 Z MEN shoes, supporting the Malaysian’s trademark brand of harsh and rapid footwork. “The shoes are very stable, and really keep me grounded during those tough points in the match,” spoke Chong Wei.

Indonesia Impresses in Men’s Doubles

The Indonesian pair of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon (VOLTRIC 70 E-tunePOWER CUSHION 65) and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo (ARCSABER 11POWER CUSHION AERUS 2 MENS) put on a stunning show at this year’s Yonex All England Open, winning their first title at the tournament. The duo had a great week, winning all but one of their matches in straight games.

The No. 5 seeded Indonesians would face the No. 6 Chinese pair of Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen in the final match, seizing control of the court with lightning speed and pin-point precision. After getting the edge over their opponents in the close opening game, the Indonesians quickly grabbed the lead in game 2 and never let it go. On the final point, the duo played tenaciously to keep the shuttle out of their side of the court. They would win 21-19 21-14 when the Chinese sent the shuttle careening into the net.

Ratchanok Intanon (VOLTRIC 70 E-tunePOWER CUSHION AERUS 2 LADIES) placed as finalist for the second time at the Yonex All England in women’s singles, while women’s doubles would see the Danish pair of Kamilla Rytter Juhl (DUORA 10POWER CUSHION 65) and Christinna Pedersen (DUORA 7POWER CUSHION 65) place as finalists for the first time. This was the first time in 21 years that a European pair had made it to the women’s doubles final.
