In women’s singles, World No. 2 Akane Yamaguchi (JPN) needed just 38 minutes to defeat the Uber Cup Thailand team captain, Nitchaon Jindapol, 21-12, 21-12. Pusarla V. Sindhu (IND), Carolina Marin (ESP) and Saina Nehwal (IND) all also won in straight games. Newhal fought off a resurgent Ratchanok Intanon (THA), 21-16, 21-19, to book her spot, and will now face Marin in the quarter-finals.
In women’s doubles, World No. 2 pair Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota continued their hot streak, defeating Bulgarian sisters Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva, 21-10, 21-11. While in mixed doubles, England’s Chris and Gabrielle Adcock handled 9th seeds He Jiting and DuYue of China in 40 minutes, 21-16, 21-16.
