Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold 2016: Lee Chong Wei Earns 5th Title at Local Tournament

The Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold came to an end on Sunday, January 24th, with Lee Chong Wei (DUORA 10, POWER CUSHION AERUS) once again coming out victorious on his home soil. 

Chong Wei faced off against young local talent Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, with both players competing on even footing as the match got underway. However, it was Chong Wei who asserted his storied experience and power, expertly sealing the match with a resounding smash straight into the back corner of the court. The Malaysian national hero won his fifth title at the tournament with a final score of 21-18, 21-11.

In men’s doubles, Malaysian pair Koo Kien Keat (VOLTRIC 80 E-tune, SHBSC5MX)/Tan Boon Heong(VOLTRIC 80 E-tune, SHBSC5MX) made it through to the finals, brilliantly defeating No. 1 seeds Kim Gi Jung and Kim Sa Rang in a tense three-game match in the semifinal. They came close to victory after a 21-18, 13-21, 18-21 defeat to Indonesia's Gideon Markus Fernaldi-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamulko.

In women’s doubles, Ayaka Takahashi (VOLTRIC 80 E-tune) and Misaki Matsutomo beat Chinese pair Tang Yuanting and Yu Yang in straight games at 21-18, 22-20. Japanese duo controlled the match through Ayaka’s strong smashes, and firmly grasping victory over the Chinese pair.
