Lee Chong Wei’s Ninth & Mohammad Ahsan’s First Malaysia Open Title

In front of the home Malaysian crowd, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei (VTZF) claimed the 6th straight and his 9th Malaysia Open title by defeating Sony Dwi Kuncoro (VT80), 21-7 21-8.

Current ranked world No. 5, Sony defeated Japanese two top shuttler, Sho Sasaki and Kenichi Tago (ARC-ZS) en route. The semifinal against Kenichi was really tough, because he really aimed his first Superseries title so much. They went into the decider and Kenichi led the game by 19-17, however, Sony got back to ensure his fourth straight victory against the Japanese with 21-12, 19-21, 23-21.

In the final, Sony managed to return Chong Wei’s attacking and accurate net shots, however, Chong Wei was too fast to catch up for him. Earning 19 smash winners and 13 net winners, Chong Wei took home the title by 21-7, 21-8.

In the men’s doubles, Indonesian Mohammad Ahsan (NS9900) won his first Superseries title with veteran Hendra Setiawan (ARC7). They faced Korean Sung Hyun Ko and Yong Dae Lee in the final. The Korean duo had kept wining streak in five tournaments, but at this sixth event, Mohammad and Hendra stopped their campaign. The Indonesian pair attacked so much to make 22 smash winners while the opponents did just 7.

Danish Christinna Pedersen (NR800) won the women’s doubles title last year, and this time she captured the mixed doubles title with Joachim Fischer Nielsen by defeating local pair, Chan Peng Soon (ARC10) and Goh Liu Ying (NR700RP) by 21-13, 21-18.
