This year’s world champion, Carolina Marin (NANORAY Z-SPEED, SHBF1NLTD) continued to demonstrate her prowess on the court in her match against Malaysia’s Lydia Li Ya Cheah. The Spanish badminton powerhouse didn’t lose the lead over her opponent even once in the first game, winning it assuredly. The second game saw the Malaysian player bounce back with a bit more tenacity, with the two shuttlers exchanging points back and forth for the first half of the second game. However, Carolina regained control and closed out the match with an overwhelming 21-10, 21-10 score. Coming off her China Open Superseries Premier victory, Saina Nehwal (NANORAY 900) continued her reign, moving on to the quarterfinals after another solid win, this time over Beiwen Zhang (ARCSABER 9FL, SHB87LTD). Saina lost the lead only once throughout the match, finishing the match in 31 minutes at 21-16, 21-13. YONEX shuttlers Akane Yamaguchi (VOLTRIC 80) and 2013 world champion Ratchanok Intanon (VOLTRIC 70 E-tune, SHBF1NLX) had a tense, hour-long match that ran three games, ending at 19-21, 21-19, 21-19.
Men’s doubles proved to be a stage to a huge upset, with German pair Michael Fuchs (VOLTRIC 80, SHBSC6iEX)/Johannes Shoettler (VOLTRIC Z-FORCE II, SHB-87EX) defeating No. 1 seeds Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong. After a close first game that saw the Germans victorious, the Korean pair came back with a vengeance for a second-game win. However, game three saw the Germans get back on their feet, maintaining a healthy lead for most of the game, and closed the match out at just over an hour at 21-18, 12-21, 21-14. Meanwhile, the devastating doubles pair of Mohammad Ahsan (NANORAY 900, SHB87LTD)/Hendra Setiawan (NANORAY 900, SHBF1NLTD) clashed with strong Chinese duo of Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan. While the Indonesian pair had a difficult second game, they managed to keep a few points ahead of their rivals in the first and last games, winning with a close 21-19, 6-21, 21-17 score.
