VANTAA, Finland – The 2021 Sudirman Cup kicked off with an exciting start on Sunday September 26th. This mixed-team championship is a unique competition where each team representing a country or region plays for best of 5 matches, consisting of men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
The competition is the first stop on a string of tournaments taking place in Europe and is reintroducing some badminton excitement with spectators in the stands. With COVID protocols in effect, world-class badminton players are welcomed back into a lively atmosphere with crowds and cheering.
With a total of 16 teams competing, the matchups will begin with a round-robin group stage, advancing into the tournament rounds from Friday. The defending champion, China, stepped onto the courts on the first day, showcasing their hunger to return to the top. The 2019 Sudirman Cup runner-ups, Japan, will hit the stage on Monday against Egypt.
Also, debuting for the first time at this competition is the new ASTROX 99 White Tiger used by Japan’s Kento Momota. Tune in to see the new racquet in action.
