In women’s singles Carolina Marin (NANORAY Z-SPEED, SHB-02LX) maintained her position as the World Champion, triumphing at the tournament for a second consecutive year. The World No. 1 Spaniard got the edge over Korean Sung Ji Hyun in a three-game semifinal grabbing 10 straight points from 8-13 in the third game, leading her to a 21-17, 15-21, 21-16 win. Carolina proceeded to meet India’s Saina Nehwal (NANORAY 900, SHB02LTD) in the final match. World No. 2 Saina became the first Indian player to advance to a World Championships final after defeating local shuttler Lindaweni Fanetri (NANORAY Z-SPEED) in the semifinal in straight games at 21-17 21-17. Saina had the lead at 12-6 in the final match’s second game, but Carolina came storming back. Pouring significant pressure on her opponent, the Spanish firecracker shot off seven points in row, summarily winning the match at 21-16 21-19, and brilliantly earning her second World Championships gold medal.
In men’s doubles, local pair Mohammad Ahsan (NANORAY 900, SHB-75EX) and Hendra Setiawan (NANORAY 900, SHB-75EX) won their second World Championships gold medal. The World No. 3 pair defeated World No. 1 pair Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong in the semifinal in straight games at 21-17 21-19, booking a place in this year’s World Championships final on their local soil. The modern local legends faced Liu Xiaolong and Qiu Zihan of China in their bid for the gold, harnessing their keen teamwork and wit to make it past tough opposition on the part of their Chinese opponents in the first game, then proceeding to break them down in second, recording a straight 21-17 21-14 win in 37 minutes. Backed by the roars of their home crowd, the pair earned the gold medal once again, following up on their win in 2013.
